Peter Harris has worked with Westlake Governance for over 15 years as a senior consultant on a number of our major projects and undertakings. A Chartered Surveyor and Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors, he is also an Independent Director and Chair, with particular strengths from working in the property, engineering and construction sectors in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Governance Advice

Peter’s governance experience is extensive. He has developed governance performance models and dashboards, undertaken governance audits, coached and mentored Boards and Directors, and provided project management and director support on a range of major projects including acting as Independent Chair on the separation of Telecom New Zealand on behalf of the telecommunications industry and Minister, Independent Chair of working parties for the Telecommunication Carriers Forum in relation to minimum ultrafast broadband standards and delivery of governance audits for the Office of the Auditor General. Peter reviewed the Corporate Governance standards for the Global Corporate Governance Forum and ANZ / NZ Risk Management standards for Standards New Zealand.

Project Direction & Leadership

As a chartered surveyor, Peter brings a deep understanding of project management to the business. He has managed and directed over 100 projects in his 25 year career including a range of multi-million dollar property developments and acted as Project Director on the delivery in 2010 of Air New Zealand’s world first ‘straight to gate’ customer experience programme. In his roles with other organisations, he has held Project and Technical Director leadership roles on a range of other industry leading projects, including the use of Building Information Technology by the Ministry of Education, earthquake repairs to over 300 residential properties for IAG and the development of asset management practices for over 320 stations for Sydney Trains and Transport for NSW.

Chairmanship and Governance

Peter is a Chartered Member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors (CMINSTD), with over 15 years’ experience as a Director and Board Chairman. He is currently a member of the Board of the Facilities Management Association of NZ (FMANZ) and Chair of the FMANZ Foundation. He is also a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Oceania World Regional Board.

He has acted as an Independent Director for Buller George Turkington Limited (BGT Structures) and Cosgroves Limited (where he also acted as Board Chair), and Trustee on the Life Education Trust and The Prince’s Trust. He was a Board member for the Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce and Council member of Christchurch Polytechnic, where he also held sub-committee leadership roles.

Peter has specialised in assisting small and medium sized enterprises with the formation of formal governance practices.

Executive roles

Peter has acted as general manager for a variety of organisations over his 25 year career. He has owned and led his own property consultancy business and acted as Interim Chief Executive. Most of these roles have been associated with organisations going through periods of rapid growth, or embarking on a change in direction or strategy and requiring independent review, analysis and thinking.

Personal History

Peter emigrated to New Zealand in 1998. Prior to emigrating, Peter was the Lead Partner managing a building surveying business in SW England for Watts Plc. He now lives in Rolleston, Canterbury, has five children, keeps bees and has a passion for Formula One and motorsport.
